AFRICAN DRUM

Discover the basics and fun of playing the West African Djembe. Learn proper hand technique, coordination  and timing while practicing traditional djembe rhythms.

Students will learn the cultural and historical significance of the African Diaspora. This class is designed for all students who will be challenged at their level.

The traditional approach to learning the drum is a hands on, multi layered approach accessible through rhythm, movement, song and spoken word. It is based on Call and Response, Listening and Doing. Arts-integrated curriculum connections will be reinforced as students learn vocabulary from different languages in West Africa along with vocabulary pertaining to the subject matter and arts vocab. This course highlights leadership, teamwork/collaboration, public speaking, sensitivity, grit/perseverance, motivation to improve, critical thinking, creative problem solving, creative choices, and  self expression.
